The .FSS extension is a container for specialized data, most frequently functioning as a PLC-5 Full Source File generated by Rockwell Automation's RSLogix 5. These files encapsulate the complete logic, documentation, and symbol database for legacy PLC-5 industrial controllers. Because RSLogix 5 is specialized legacy software often requiring expensive licensing or specific hardware keys, users frequently struggle to view these files on modern systems without the original environment. Engineers typically need to convert these source files to PDF for documentation and code review, or export them to L5K or .L5X text-based formats to migrate logic to newer ControlLogix platforms.
A secondary but significant use case is the FOSS Analytical Sample Set, created by FOSS instruments for spectroscopic analysis in food and agricultural industries.
