About FOL files

The .FOL file extension primarily identifies a Sage Accounts Form Layout, a proprietary format used by Sage 50 Accounts to define the visual structure of invoices, statements, and delivery notes. These files function as containers - often technically zipped archives holding .FL7 or FLT definitions - that instruct the software on how to print variable data. The primary problem for users is their rigorous proprietary lock-in; a .FOL file cannot be opened, viewed, or edited by standard document viewers like Microsoft Word or web browsers. If you are handling legacy data, a .FOL file might alternatively be a PFS First Choice Database, a format from the 1980s software suite PFS:First Choice. In this context, users typically face the challenge of inaccessible historical records trapped in an obsolete binary format.

For Sage users, the most practical workaround is often renaming the extension to ZIP to inspect contents, though true conversion usually requires the original Sage Report Designer to export as PDF. For PFS archiving, the goal is data recovery: converting the database records into standard CSV or Excel formats for modern accessibility.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FOL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted QBM, QBB, QBX and CNF files.

The FOL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FOL converter.
