Convert a file to QBM
To convert other file formats to the "Portable Company File" file type, you need software like QuickBooks or a similar tool.
About QBM files
The .qbm file is a QuickBooks Portable Company File developed by Intuit. It functions as a highly compressed, lightweight version of your primary qbw (QuickBooks Working) database. Intuit designed this format specifically for data transfer, stripping out the massive transaction log files (tlg) so the file is small enough to send via email or save to a USB drive.
The main disadvantage of the .qbm format is its proprietary restriction. The data is locked inside an encrypted Microsoft Compound Document wrapper. You cannot open, read, or edit this file without an active, paid QuickBooks subscription. Users are frequently frustrated when they receive a .qbm file from an accountant but cannot access their own financial data because they lack the specific version of the software required to read it.
Because the internal database schema is closed, standard online converters completely fail to process .qbm files. There is no direct way to turn a .qbm into a CSV or XLSX file using a simple conversion script. The only official method is to restore the .qbm file into a full qbw file inside QuickBooks, and then manually export your reports to XLSX, CSV, or PDF.
Even with these severe vendor locks, our tools can help. This analysis often reveals exactly which version of QuickBooks was used to create the file, helping you find the right software to finally access your data.
Convert.Guru analyzes your QBM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert QBM file to QBW, CSV, BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ or 7Z, you can use QuickBooks or similar software from the "Financial Data Transfer" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to QBM, try QuickBooks or another comparable tool in the "Financial Data Transfer" category.
The QBM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our QBM converter.
