About FOG files

The .FOG file extension represents a Fontographer Font Database, a proprietary project file created by Fontographer (originally developed by Altsys, later Macromedia, and now FontLab). Unlike standard font files (TTF, OTF), a .FOG file is a "source" document containing raw Bézier curves, spacing metrics, and kerning data. You cannot install this file directly into the Windows Fonts folder or macOS Font Book. Users often encounter these files when digging through old design archives from the 1990s or early 2000s. To make the font usable, you must open the .FOG file in a compatible editor like FontLab (which can import legacy Fontographer files) and export it to a standard format like OpenType (.OTF) for modern use, or Unified Font Object (.UFO) for editing in other tools like Glyphs.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FOG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BMAP, SFN and CHR files.

The FOG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FOG converter.
