About FLY files

The .fly extension represents two distinct file types, creating a frequent point of confusion for users.

The most common iteration is a TerraExplorer Project File created by Skyline Software Systems. This file acts as a container for 3D geospatial environments, storing settings, layer references, and flight paths rather than the raw heavy terrain data itself. The biggest obstacle here is portability: because the .fly file usually links to external streaming servers or local databases (like MPT files), sending just the .fly file to a colleague often results in a "missing data" error. It is a proprietary GIS format not supported by standard viewers like Google Earth. To make this data usable outside the Skyline ecosystem, users typically convert the project export to KML or KMZ for web mapping, or render a fly-through video to MP4.

Alternatively, a .fly file may be a Flyer Design Project created by older desktop publishing tools like Avanquest Flyer/Ad Creator. These files contain layout info, text, and vector graphics intended for printing. The challenge is software obsolescence; modern suites like Adobe InDesign cannot natively open these legacy files. The best workaround is to use the original software to print the design to PDF for archiving, or convert the layout to a high-resolution JPG or PNG for digital sharing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FLY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZTL, CRV3D and XAC files.

The FLY Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FLY converter.
