About FLY files

A .fly file typically serves one of two distinct purposes: it is either a 3D terrain visualization project used by Skyline TerraExplorer, or a page layout file created by Avanquest Flyer Creator or EdrawSoft Flyer Designer. The 3D terrain variants contain geographic coordinates, 3D model references, flight paths, and geospatial metadata. The flyer variants store XML-encoded layout data, text, and local paths to image assets.

The major disadvantage of the .fly format is its proprietary nature and heavy software dependency. Terrain files are strictly bound to the Skyline ecosystem, making them useless for users who lack a specialized, high-cost GIS software license. Similarly, flyer design files are locked into outdated desktop publishing software, preventing direct viewing in modern web browsers or standard editors like Microsoft Word. These files are strictly for drafting and are not meant for final distribution.

Users frequently need to convert .fly files to accessible formats. For layout files, standard targets are PDF, JPG, or PNG for printing and sharing. For 3D terrain data, extracting coordinates to OBJ, KML, or DAE is preferred, though specialized GIS software is usually required to parse the internal geometry.

Because .fly is a closed, proprietary format in its 3D form, or an undocumented XML structure in its layout form, standard online converters usually fail to process it. Only the original software can reliably render or export the complete visual data. However, you can drag and drop your .fly file into convert.guru to identify its specific type, inspect its internal structure, and view raw text or embedded content. If our analysis detects standard XML or embedded media assets, viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FLY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZTL, CRV3D and XAC files.

The FLY Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FLY converter.
