About FIL files

The .FIL extension is notoriously fragmented and stands simply for 'file'. Developers have used it for decades as a generic container. Most commonly, it represents database tables for dBase, Clipper, or Advantage Database Server, or complex analysis results generated by Dassault Systèmes Abaqus. It is also frequently found as regional banking transaction data (such as FNB or Asobancaria payment files), network packet captures from Viavi Observer (often compressed as GZ), or even quarantined malware locked by AVG Antivirus. Surprisingly, legacy software like Adobe ImageReady sometimes used .FIL to store standard PNG images.

Because there is no single universal standard for .FIL files, your operating system will rarely know how to handle them. Double-clicking usually results in a 'Windows cannot open this file' error. The format is highly context-dependent and proprietary. Database variants are typically locked behind proprietary table indexing, making them impossible to read in a standard text editor without encountering scrambled binary data. Furthermore, relying on niche software like an Abaqus license or specialized ERP software just to view the contents is costly and inefficient.

To make .FIL files usable, you must convert them based on their underlying data structure. For database or tabular data (like dBase or Diligent ACL), converting to CSV or SQL is the best way to open the data in standard tools like Microsoft Excel. For Abaqus or scientific data, extracting to standard TXT allows for easier parsing. If the file is a renamed image or packet capture, you will need to extract the raw data to PNG or PCAP.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FIL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FILL, PNG, JPG, STR, LBL and NDX files.

The FIL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FIL converter.
