The .fhd extension is a digital artifact with two distinct identities, often causing confusion for users trying to access old archives. Most commonly in a conversion context, it represents a FreeHand Drawing created by Macromedia FreeHand (later acquired by Adobe). These are vector graphics files containing scalable lines, curves, and text, widely used in the 90s and early 2000s for professional illustration before Adobe Illustrator became the industry standard.
The primary difficulty is obsolescence: Adobe FreeHand was discontinued in 2007. Modern creative software, including recent versions of Illustrator, often cannot open these legacy files directly, leaving users with "locked" designs they cannot view or edit. Additionally, because the format is proprietary, standard image viewers and web browsers render them as unrecognizable binary data.
A secondary, more technical use case (approx. 20% of files) involves the UnityFS format. Here, an .fhd file serves as a Unity Game Asset Bundle, containing packed textures, models, or audio for video games built on the Unity engine. These are not documents but data containers used by the game at runtime.
