An .FDP file is most commonly an FMOD Designer Project file or a Food Defense Plan document. In FMOD, the file stores audio event configurations, sound definitions, and routing parameters used by game developers. It is saved in plain XML format, meaning it contains text-based instructions rather than actual audio data. In the context of food safety, it is generated by the FDA Food Defense Plan Builder to store security protocols.
To open these files, you need specific software like FMOD Studio or the FDA Food Defense Plan Builder. Because the majority of .FDP files are essentially XML documents, you can also view their raw code using text editors like Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code. Minor uses of the .FDP extension include FaceRig avatar data, Phantasy Star Online 2 character presets, and Adobe Photoshop duotone settings.
The main disadvantage of the .FDP format is that it is highly proprietary and dependent on external assets. Sharing an FMOD project file is useless if the recipient lacks the software or the linked WAV and OGG audio files. Similarly, an FDA plan requires the official builder tool to be read properly.
