About FDL files
The .FDL file format most commonly functions as a Foundation Drilling Log used in geotechnical engineering to record operational data from drilling rigs. However, this extension is highly fragmented across completely unrelated industries. It is also utilized as raw component XML data logs for agricultural equipment, firmware updates for satellite receivers and printers, and even compiled component libraries for software development platforms.
To natively open these files, you typically need proprietary tools like the ecosystem provided by Jean Lutz S.A., the John Deere Service Advisor, or the CAST Software WYSIWYG Editor.
Users frequently need to convert .FDL files because the format is highly restrictive. A major disadvantage is its reliance on expensive, specialized software. If an engineer receives a drilling log or a technician exports a tractor's diagnostic log, they cannot easily share those insights with stakeholders who only have standard office software. Furthermore, without the original software, the file appears as an unrecognized binary or generic document.
For data-driven .FDL files, the best conversion targets are ZIP, XML, or CSV. Converting the file to CSV allows raw sensor and diagnostic data to be parsed in standard spreadsheet applications. However, attempting to convert firmware or compiled component libraries will inevitably result in corrupted, unreadable output.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because standard tools cannot guess the internal structure. An .FDL might be a standard ZIP archive, an EXE executable, or a UTF-16 text file. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Our platform can identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FDL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The FDL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FDL converter.
