To convert other file formats to the "Legacy Diagram File" file type, you need software like Flow_Charting or a similar tool.
About FCX files
The .FCX extension creates confusion because it serves three distinct, incompatible ecosystems, often leaving users with a file they cannot view. Most commonly, it represents a legacy flowchart created by Patton & Patton Flow Charting (versions 3 through 6). These proprietary vector files are notorious for being locked into an obsolete ecosystem; modern diagramming tools like Microsoft Visio do not natively support them. If you lack the original Windows 98/XP-era software, accessing these organizational charts or process maps is impossible. The best workaround is converting them to PDF to preserve vector quality for printing, or PNG for easy sharing on the web.
Alternatively, in scientific research, an .FCX file is an analysis document generated by FCSalyzer. Unlike the binary flowcharts, these are XML-based text files used to store gating strategies and statistics for flow cytometry data. The friction here is that the .FCX file does not contain the biological data itself - it only links to external FCS files. To make this data useful for publication, researchers typically need to convert the visual output to SVG or the statistical tables to CSV or Excel. Finally, .FCX files may be feature license keys for Hytera radio firmware, which are encrypted binary files that should not be converted.

The FCX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FCX converter.
