About FAN files
The .FAN file format primarily functions as a Finale Font Annotation file used by MakeMusic Finale. These files do not contain the actual font glyphs; instead, they store vital metric data, bounding boxes, and spacing rules that tell Finale how to correctly position musical symbols on a staff. A small percentage of .FAN files are also used as animation files by AutoDesSys Form•Z. Because .FAN is a proprietary settings file tightly coupled with specific software, it poses severe disadvantages for general users. It is completely useless without the accompanying TTF or OTF font file. Furthermore, MakeMusic discontinued Finale, turning .FAN into a legacy format. You cannot open it in a web browser, and text editors will usually just show garbled binary data. Standard online converters fail to process it because it is not a standard document or media file. Converting a .FAN file directly into a standard document format like PDF or DOCX is generally impossible because it only contains mathematical offsets, not human-readable text or images. If you are migrating away from Finale, you usually have to export your entire score as MusicXML from within the original software. Because this file format is difficult to open or convert, often only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FAN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FAN file to AC, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT or X_T, you can use MakeMusic Finale or similar software from the "Music Font Metrics Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The FAN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FAN converter.
