The .eyetv format is a macOS proprietary bundle created by EyeTV software (developed by Geniatech, originally by Elgato) to save recorded digital television broadcasts.
The primary disadvantage of the .eyetv format is its proprietary package structure. On macOS, it functions and appears as a single file. In reality, it is a directory containing standard video streams (usually MPG, TS, or MP4) alongside custom XML metadata index files. This creates major ecosystem lock-in. You cannot easily open, stream, or play these packages natively on Windows, Linux, smart TVs, or web browsers without jumping through hoops to extract the inner video.
Users must convert or extract this file to liberate their recordings from outdated hardware. Converting to universal target formats like MP4 or MKV ensures the video can be played on any modern media player, though original TV guide metadata may be lost.
Because .eyetv is a closed, proprietary package format rather than a flat file, standard online converters fail to process it.
