About XAS files
The .XAS filename extension is a dual-purpose format that most commonly acts as a proprietary Game Voice Audio container used in classic titles like Max Payne and Mafia. These files contain dialogue or sound effects encoded in specialized formats (often ADPCM variants) to optimize performance on older hardware or consoles. A common problem for users is that standard media players like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player cannot natively open them; they appear as unrecognizable binary data. To listen to or edit these clips, users must convert them to universally supported formats like WAV or MP3 using dedicated game extraction tools.
Alternatively, in professional engineering environments, a .XAS file acts as a Pro/ENGINEER Assembly Instance Accelerator. Created by software now known as PTC Creo, these are cache files designed to speed up the loading time of complex 3D assembly (.ASM) files. A major limitation here is that the file does not contain the full geometry definition - it is merely a lightweight reference. Trying to convert a standalone CAD .XAS file to STL or PDF will typically fail because the parent assembly data is missing. For archiving or viewing, the original assembly must be opened in Creo and exported to STEP, IGES, or 3D PDF.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XAS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted PUP, MINIPSF and PSAR files.
The XAS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XAS converter.
