About EVENT files
The .EVENT file format primarily stores system log data, security camera motion events, and dashcam recording metadata. These files are typically generated by Hikvision DVR/NVR systems, VIOFO dashcams, or DVR365 devices to timestamp critical video events. In scientific fields, the .EVENT extension is also used for European Data Format (EDF) biosignal annotations. The main disadvantage of the .EVENT format is its highly proprietary nature. Files generated by security cameras are often encrypted or stored in closed binary formats, meaning they require a $0 but hardware-locked proprietary viewer like Hikvision iVMS to open. Users frequently face a major conversion challenge: they mistakenly believe the .EVENT file contains actual video footage and attempt to convert it to an .MP4 file. In reality, it is usually just a metadata or log file. Standard online converters fail to process these files because they are not standard media or document formats. If the file is plain text or JSON (which accounts for a small portion of generic software logs), you can convert it to .TXT, .CSV, or .JSON to analyze the data. Because this is a closed, proprietary format, it is extremely difficult to open or convert without the original software. Our platform will inspect the internal structure.
