About ESX files
The .ESX file is primarily an Ekahau Site Survey Project file. Network engineers use it to store Wi-Fi heatmaps, floor plan images, and access point configurations. Ekahau Site Survey is the main software used to create and analyze these files. Other less common uses include EyeSuite XML files for ophthalmology data from Haag-Streit, Xactimate insurance claim estimates, and Korg Electribe audio sampler data.
These proprietary formats are heavily restricted by vendor lock-in. Ekahau requires a costly enterprise license (often thousands of dollars) just to open the file and view a basic floor plan. Xactimate and EyeSuite are similarly gated behind expensive, industry-specific software subscriptions. This creates a major bottleneck when a client or colleague sends you an .ESX file, locking you out of the data unless you pay. Most users simply need the floor plan images, access point coordinates, or raw text data to view them in standard web browsers or document viewers.
For Ekahau projects, the best conversion target is ZIP. Since the file is just a compressed container, renaming or converting it to a ZIP archive allows you to extract the internal PNG, JPG, and XML files. Be aware that while you will successfully recover the images and data tables, you will lose the interactive, multi-layered heatmap overlays generated by the native software.
Because .ESX is a closed, proprietary format, it is notoriously difficult to process. Standard online converters routinely fail because they do not understand the internal folder hierarchy or the specific XML schemas. Often, only the original software can properly render the full visual data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying ZIP or XML structure, extracting the core data and conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ESX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ESX file to PDF, XML, QB, FML, CSV, JSON, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG or CONF, you can use Ekahau Pro or similar software from the "Wi-Fi Site Survey Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to ESX, try Ekahau Pro or another comparable tool in the "Wi-Fi Site Survey Storage" category.
The ESX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ESX converter.
