An .EON file is most commonly a custom board game component file created by Strange Eons, a Java-based tool used heavily for designing fan-made paper game components for titles like Arkham Horror. Less frequently, it functions as a particle effect definition in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. video game series or as a 3D digital nature environment file for E-on Software Vue.
The main disadvantage of the .EON format is that it is strictly proprietary. A Strange Eons .EON file acts as a project container storing layout instructions, text properties, and image asset references, rather than functioning as a standalone image. Users cannot open it natively in web browsers, standard image viewers, or mobile devices, and it requires a Java runtime environment along with the exact original software to render correctly.
