About DRS files

The .DRS format primarily functions as a packed data archive for the Genie Engine, the software architecture behind Age of Empires. It bundles sprites, sounds, and UI elements into a single container file. However, this extension is highly fragmented across completely unrelated industries. It is heavily used as a printer driver configuration file for ZebraDesigner, as proprietary video files for Black-Sys and DOD Tech dashcams, and even as scene files structured in JSON for D5 Render.

The main disadvantage of a .DRS file is this extreme fragmentation. You cannot simply double-click a .DRS file in a modern OS or browser and expect it to open. Game modders cannot edit packed assets without specialized extraction tools like DRS Explorer. Dashcam owners frequently discover their accident recordings are unplayable in standard media players like VLC, preventing them from sending footage to insurance companies or uploading it to the web.

To overcome these hurdles, conversion is necessary. For game modding, extract and convert the internal assets to standard WAV or SLP files. If you possess a dashcam .DRS video, convert it to MP4 for universal playback and web sharing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DRS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ALT, GAX and AGN files.

The DRS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DRS converter.
