To convert other file formats to the "Electronic Design Automation" file type, you need software like DipTrace or a similar tool.
The .eli extension serves two distinct, high-tech purposes that often cause confusion. Most commonly, it is a DipTrace Component Library file generated by DipTrace. These binary files act as containers for electronic component definitions, storing both the schematic symbol and the physical PCB footprint pattern required for circuit board design. The key problem here is the proprietary nature of the format; you cannot open a .eli file in competitors like Altium Designer or KiCad directly without first exporting it to an ASCII format. Users frequently need to convert these libraries into human-readable PDF catalogs for team reviews or strictly formatted ASC (ASCII) files for version control and interoperability.
Alternatively, in scientific laboratories, a .eli file may contain EDX Elemental Analysis data or X-ray mapping images created by EDAX TEAM software (now part of AMETEK). These files store spectral data from Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM). Because this is highly specialized instrument data, it is virtually inaccessible without the original analysis suite. Researchers often need to convert this raw data into CSV or XML for statistical analysis in Excel or standard image formats like TIFF or PNG for publication in academic journals.
