The .ekb file extension is a "chameleon" format used by three distinct, incompatible ecosystems, often leading to confusion.

  1. Encrypted Key Backup & Database Files: Most commonly, users encounter this as a secure backup file created by EasyKeepBackup or associated with Microsoft SQL Server key management. These files function as digital vaults, storing encrypted keys or database snapshots required to restore system access or integrity. Because they are encrypted binary containers, they cannot simply be "opened" in a text editor like Notepad without corrupting the data.
  2. ZMC Visual Tablet Data: In the CAD world, .ekb files store configuration data for ZMC VisualTablet, a legacy plugin for AutoCAD. These files map tablet digitizer inputs to on-screen commands.
  3. Ensoniq Knowledge Base: A rarer variant involves legacy Ensoniq audio hardware, where the file serves as a firmware or knowledge base resource.

Practical Constraints: The real problem is proprietary lock-in. A SQL .ekb file is useless without the corresponding database engine and password; a ZMC file is illegible without the specific legacy plugin. Users often try to convert these to PDF or TXT to view the contents, but direct conversion is rarely possible without the original software to "print" the data first. For archiving, the best approach is opening the file in its native environment and exporting to a universal format like CSV (for data) or PDF (for layouts).
