About EFX files
The .efx file extension primarily represents an eFax Document, a proprietary digital fax format developed by j2 Global. These files function as multi-page raster images - similar to TIFF - but are encapsulated in a specialized container designed for the eFax service.
The Problem: The core challenge with .efx files is proprietary lock-in. They generally cannot be opened by standard operating system tools like Windows Photo Viewer, Apple Preview, or web browsers. To view them natively, you are often forced to download and install legacy software like eFax Messenger, which may be cumbersome or incompatible with modern mobile workflows.
The Solution: For business continuity and accessibility, converting .efx files is the industry standard.
- For Universal Access: Convert to PDF. This is the best target format for emailing, printing, and viewing faxes on mobile devices.
- For Archiving: Convert to TIFF or PDF/A to preserve the exact pixel data of the original fax without the proprietary header.
- For Image Editing: Convert to PNG or JPG if you need to import a fax page into design software like Adobe Photoshop.
Note for Gamers: If you discovered this file in a game folder (e.g., Devil May Cry 4 or Cabal Online), it is likely a Game Visual Effects file used by the MT Framework engine. These are compiled binary scripts governing particle effects and cannot be converted to document formats.

The EFX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EFX converter.
