About EFD files
The .EFD file extension is most commonly an Engine Firmware Data file. It stores firmware parameters, engine maps, and tuning data for Electronic Control Units (ECUs) in vehicles manufactured by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). Other uses include game effectiveness data for the classic PC game X-COM: Apocalypse, electronic tax return data formatted for the IRS FIRE system, and event floor plans created in ExpoCAD. To open and edit automotive .EFD files, tuners use specialized software like EFD Editor or proprietary ECU flashing tools. For the game files, modding tools specific to X-COM: Apocalypse are required. ExpoCAD files require ExpoCAD. Automotive .EFD files are highly proprietary, undocumented, and often encrypted binary files. They are difficult to read without specific definition files or tuning suites. They cannot be naturally opened by standard text editors or web browsers. The IRS and ExpoCAD variants are equally specialized and locked into their respective legacy ecosystems. Standard online converters fail to process these because they lack the specific parsing logic for these niche database schemas. If you are extracting maps from ECU files, you might target BIN, HEX, or CSV for data logging. Game data is typically converted to XML or JSON for modding. Because .EFD is a closed, proprietary format, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, you can drag and drop your file into convert.guru to see what it is. Our system can inspect the binary header, identify the specific subtype of .EFD, and extract plain text strings or embedded formats like MKV (which is sometimes used internally by these files). If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EFD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The EFD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EFD converter.
