About EF files

The .EF file extension is most commonly associated with ExamView, a widely used assessment suite now part of Echo360. These files contain digital tests, quizzes, or answer keys, including text-based questions, multiple-choice options, and embedded media. A common issue with .EF files is their proprietary nature; they are strictly designed to be opened with the ExamView Test Generator or ExamView Player. This can lead to major headaches for educators and students who need to access the content without installing specific, often licensed, software. Users typically need to convert these assessments into more accessible formats like PDF for printing and distribution, or DOCX (Microsoft Word) for further editing and formatting.

A secondary but significant use of the .EF extension is for encrypted firmware files used by EFT Pro (Easy-Firmware Team) dongles or Huawei mobile devices. in this context, the file is often a disguised ZIP archive containing system images and bootloaders.
