About EDV files

The .EDV file is a proprietary disk image format used exclusively to archive data from the Ensoniq VFX-SD synthesizer workstation. It contains a bit-for-bit copy of a double-density floppy disk, storing the synthesizer's patches, sequences, presets, and drum kits.

Traditionally, these files are managed using vintage DOS utilities or modern specialized librarian tools like Chicken Systems Ensoniq Disk Tools.

The primary disadvantage of the .EDV format is its completely closed ecosystem. The Ensoniq VFX-SD relies on a proprietary, non-DOS file system that modern operating systems (Windows, macOS) cannot read natively. You cannot simply mount or double-click an .EDV file to access your music data. This makes archiving vintage studio data incredibly difficult, often requiring a physical floppy emulator like a Gotek drive to use the files on the actual hardware.

To make this data usable today, users need to convert the internal contents into Standard MIDI files (MID) for sequence playback or System Exclusive files (SYX) for patch backup. For hardware emulation, the image is often converted to .HFE.

Because this is a highly specific hardware dump, standard online converters will fail to process it. If our analysis detects extractable MIDI or SysEx data embedded within the disk sectors, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EDV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EDQ, EDK and EUI files.

The EDV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EDV converter.
