About ECT files
The .ect extension is a "collision" format, meaning it is used by three completely different types of software, creating a high risk of confusion.
- Encrypted Executable (15% Share): The most common technical use is as an ECT Encrypter file. These are standard Windows EXE programs that have been wrapped in an encryption layer to hide their contents. While legitimate developers use this to protect code, it is statistically heavily associated with the Emotet malware family. Users often encounter these as suspicious attachments. Constraint: You cannot "convert" these to readable documents like PDF or DOCX. If you did not create this file yourself, do not run it. Scan it immediately with security tools like ESET EmoCheck.
- Easy Computer Testing File (8% Share): In educational settings, this is a data file created by Easy Computer Testing software. It contains questions, answer keys, and grading logic for digital exams. Friction: These files are proprietary and cannot be opened by Microsoft Word or Excel. To view the content without the original outdated software, users typically need to convert the text data to TXT or PDF for printing and archiving.
- Yozo Office Chart Template (0.9% Share): A niche template format used by Yozo Office (a Microsoft Office alternative). It stores chart designs and styles. These can often be opened in Yozo and re-saved as standard XLSX or OTS files for broader compatibility.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ECT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted ELF, BIN, XEX, BCT, PCT and EST files.
The ECT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ECT converter.
