The .ecr file is primarily an Electronic Cash Register data file utilized by point-of-sale hardware from brands like SAM4s, Ecolink, and Casio to store daily transaction journals, sales reports, and energy consumption logs. In a completely different context, it also functions as an Electronic Challan cum Return file for the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) in India, and as an export format for French accounting entries via Isagri software. The main disadvantage of the .ecr format is its proprietary and heavily locked-down nature. Cash register files are frequently encrypted or written in raw binary to prevent tampering with financial audit trails, meaning you cannot natively open them in a standard text editor without seeing garbled characters.
