To convert other file formats to the "Court Reporting Transcript" file type, you need software like Eclipse CAT or a similar tool.
About ECL files
The .ECL file extension is primarily associated with Eclipse CAT Transcript files created by Advantage Software's Eclipse CAT, a leading computer-aided transcription tool used by court reporters. These files store raw stenographic notes, translated text, and formatting rules. Another common use is for Canon eCopy ShareScan files, which act as wrappers for scanned documents routed across enterprise networks. Less frequently, .ECL extensions denote game enemy behavior scripts in the Touhou Project series by Team Shanghai Alice, reservoir simulation input decks in Schlumberger ECLIPSE, or gas corrector logs by Honeywell. Users usually need to convert .ECL files because they are highly proprietary. For example, a court reporter cannot simply send an .ECL transcript to a lawyer or client because the recipient will not have the expensive Eclipse CAT software required to open it. The software is niche and requires a paid license. Similarly, Canon eCopy files might trap your scanned data inside an enterprise routing system instead of a standard format. To share these files, you must convert them to standard formats. For transcripts, the best target formats are PDF for fixed layouts, DOCX for editing, or TXT for raw text. For scanned documents, PDF or TIFF are standard. Converting .ECL files with generic tools is notoriously difficult. They are closed, proprietary formats. Standard online converters fail because they lack the specific decoders for Advantage Software or Canon's internal data structures. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The ECL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ECL converter.
