About ECL files
The .ecl extension most frequently designates a Total Eclipse transcript file created by Advantage Software. Used primarily by court reporters and captioners, these files contain synchronized stenography notes, audio links, and formatted text. The major constraint is their proprietary nature; they are designed exclusively for the Total Eclipse CAT (Computer-Aided Translation) ecosystem. A standard text editor cannot interpret the embedded timecodes or steno dictionaries, rendering the file unreadable for attorneys or clients who do not possess the expensive ($4,000+) licensing. To make these files useful for legal review or archiving, users must typically convert them to PDF (for fixed layout), standard ASCII / TXT (the industry standard for litigation support), or RTF (for word processing).
Alternatively, in the gaming/anime subculture, an .ecl file is a compiled script used by the Touhou Project games (developed by Team Shanghai Alice). These control enemy behavior and bullet patterns (danmaku). These are binary files that cannot be edited directly; modders typically decompile them into text to adjust difficulty or create fan patches.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ECL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ECL file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Total Eclipse or similar software from the "Court Reporting Transcript" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to ECL, try Total Eclipse or another comparable tool in the "Court Reporting Transcript" category.
The ECL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ECL converter.
