Convert DXE to another file type
To convert your DXE file to another format, you need Autodesk AutoCAD or other Settings software.
Convert a file to DXE
To convert other file formats to the "CAD Template" file type, you need software like Autodesk AutoCAD or a similar tool.
About DXE files
A .dxe file is a Data Extraction Template created by Autodesk AutoCAD. It functions as a configuration file - a recipe, not a meal - that stores the specific criteria used to extract object data (such as block attributes, layers, and drawing properties) from DWG files into external tables like XLS or CSV.
A common issue for users is the misconception that the .dxe file contains the extracted data itself. It does not. If you have been sent a .dxe file and expect to see a spreadsheet, you are missing the output file. To generate the actual data, you must have the original drawing files and a licensed copy of AutoCAD to run the extraction wizard again using this template. Additionally, because these files rely on absolute or relative paths to specific drawings, moving them between computers often breaks the extraction logic.
For users who simply need to inspect the extraction rules or debug the template without launching heavy CAD software, converting the file to XML or TXT is the most practical workflow. This reveals the underlying schema and property filters in a human-readable format. For documentation purposes, converting the text representation to PDF preserves the settings for archiving.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DXE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DXE file to DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT, X_T or X_B, you can use Autodesk AutoCAD or similar software from the "Data Extraction Settings" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to DXE, try Autodesk AutoCAD or another comparable tool in the "Data Extraction Settings" category.
The DXE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DXE converter.
