About COOT files

A .coot file is primarily an encrypted data file created by the STOP/Djvu ransomware family. When a computer is infected by this malware, it systematically targets user files - especially images like JPG, documents like DOCX, and archives - encrypting their contents and appending the .coot extension. A much rarer secondary use of the name relates to Coot (Crystallographic Object-Oriented Toolkit), a legitimate molecular graphics application for structural biology, though it typically does not save files with a .coot extension.

Victims of this ransomware urgently need to convert or restore .coot files back to their original target formats (such as JPG or PDF) to regain access to personal photos and vital documents. The primary disadvantage of this format is devastating: it is heavily encrypted, often using Salsa20 or AES-256 encryption. Without the unique private decryption key held by the attackers, the data inside remains unreadable.

Because this is a closed, maliciously encrypted format, standard online converters will always fail to process it. Standard converters look for recognized file headers, which the ransomware has deliberately overwritten. This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert; you cannot simply change the extension back to JPG. Often, only specialized decryption tools, such as the Emsisoft STOP Djvu Decryptor, can properly read and restore the data - and only if an offline key was used during the infection.

Despite these strict limitations, convert.guru can still be highly useful. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and analyze it. Our tool can inspect the hex data of the .coot file and show text or internal content. Because the STOP/Djvu ransomware typically appends a unique Personal ID and a marker at the very end of the file (leaving the tail unencrypted), inspecting the file with our hex viewer allows you to safely retrieve this ID, which is a crucial first step in checking if a free decryption key exists.

Convert.Guru analyzes your COOT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DSN6, RGB and JFIF files.

The COOT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our COOT converter.
