Convert a file to GAX
To convert other file formats to the "Game Archive and Campaign" file type, you need software like Age of Empires II or a similar tool.
About GAX files
The .GAX file extension represents two distinct proprietary game file formats. Primarily, it is an Age of Empires II Campaign Scenario file originally developed by Ensemble Studios. These files act as containers that bind multiple custom maps, storyline text, and triggers into a single playable campaign. Alternatively, it functions as a Game Audio Archive utilized by older video games developed by Radical Entertainment.
Opening these files requires specific context-aware software. To launch a strategy game campaign, you must place the file in the correct directory and use the built-in campaign menu in Age of Empires II. For the audio archives, players must rely on specialized third-party extraction tools like Game Archive eXtractor to pull the individual sound clips from the unified data blob.
The main disadvantage of the .GAX format is its closed, engine-specific nature. Age of Empires campaign files are heavily tied to the game's proprietary scripting language and map coordinates. They are entirely useless outside the game environment. Similarly, the audio archives obscure the underlying sound files, preventing standard media players from recognizing the audio tracks.
If you possess a game audio .GAX file, your ideal target formats for extraction are standard MP3 or WAV files. For campaign scenarios, conversion to standard document or image formats is practically impossible because the binary data represents game logic, not printable text.
Because these are closed, proprietary formats, standard online converters will routinely fail to process them. Often, only the original game software or community-built extractors can correctly interpret the data. We can inspect the file's raw hex data and reveal hidden text strings or embedded media. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GAX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GAX file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Age of Empires II or similar software from the "Game Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to GAX, try Age of Empires II or another comparable tool in the "Game Data Storage" category.
The GAX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GAX converter.
