About DPV files

The .dpv extension is a technical chameleon, most frequently encountered as a PagePlus Document Preview file created by the now-discontinued Serif PagePlus (now replaced by Affinity Publisher). In this role, the file acts as a cached thumbnail container using the Microsoft Compound format, allowing the software to display a preview of a project (.ppp) without loading the full resource-heavy file. Users often mistake these for their actual project backups, but they are proprietary, low-resolution placeholders that cannot be edited or used for print.

However, a significant number of .dpv files are actually Digital Surveillance Video recordings generated by Bosch Security Systems DVR units. These are not simple video files; they are raw data streams optimized for security logging, often lacking standard headers required by players like Windows Media Player. A third variation exists as parameter files for WABCO trailer diagnostics, used in automotive ECUs.

Conversion Strategies:

For PagePlus (Small Size): Since the file only contains a preview image, you cannot convert it back to a working document. The best outcome is converting it to JPG or PNG to salvage the visual reference.
For Bosch DVR (Large Size): These files are locked into a proprietary format. To view the footage on standard devices or upload it to the web, you must convert the stream to MP4 (H.264) or AVI. This strips the proprietary wrapper while preserving the visual evidence.
