A .schdocpreview file is a proprietary visual thumbnail generated by Altium Designer, an industry-standard Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software suite. When an engineer creates a schematic document (schdoc), Altium automatically generates this companion file. The file provides a quick visual preview of the circuit diagram for the software's project explorer, allowing users to identify files without loading the heavy underlying project database into memory.
The main disadvantage of the .schdocpreview format is its strict vendor lock-in. You cannot open it natively without a costly, enterprise-level Altium Designer license. Standard image viewers, web browsers, and competing CAD programs cannot read the proprietary encoding. Furthermore, the file is highly limited by design. It only contains a low-resolution visual snapshot, entirely stripping out the actual electrical netlist, routing rules, and editable vector components found in the parent schematic file.
