About DMSD files
A .DMSD file is not a playable video file; it is a proprietary MyDVD Slideshow Data project file created by Roxio MyDVD (often included in the Roxio Creator suite). These files are essentially XML containers that store the architecture of a DVD project - including menu layouts, button styles, and the specific file paths to the audio, video, and image assets used in your slideshow.
Because .DMSD files contain only references to media rather than the media itself, they are significantly smaller than actual video files (often just a few kilobytes). This creates a common issue: users find a .DMSD file and attempt to play it in standard media players like VLC or upload it to YouTube, only to find it fails instantly. Furthermore, because the file relies on absolute file paths, if you move the original source photos or videos on your hard drive, the .DMSD project will break and fail to load the content.
To make this content usable, you must open the project in the original Roxio software and use the "Burn" or "Export" function. For physical archiving, render the project to a ISO disc image. For digital sharing and web compatibility, export the slideshow to MP4 (H.264) or MOV formats. If you do not have access to Roxio software, you can open the file in a text editor like Notepad++ to view the XML data and manually locate the file paths of your original media assets.

The DMSD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DMSD converter.
