A .DMSD file is a proprietary DVD authoring project file created by Roxio MyDVD (originally developed by Sonic Solutions). It is primarily used to store the structural layout of a DVD, including menu designs, text placements, and the sequence of slideshows and video clips.
The most significant disadvantage of the .DMSD format is that it causes massive user confusion. Users frequently attempt to play a .DMSD file in media players or upload it to standard video converters. This always fails because a .DMSD file contains zero video or audio data. Instead, it is an XML text document that strictly stores file paths pointing to the original media assets on your local hard drive. It requires the original Roxio software to open. If you move, rename, or delete the original source videos on your computer, the .DMSD file becomes completely useless and will show missing asset errors.
Because this is a closed project format, standard online converters cannot process it into a playable video. To get a standard video file, you must open the project in Roxio Creator and use the software to render or export the final project to MP4, AVI, or burn it directly to an ISO disk image.
