About DMF files
The .dmf file extension is a container for two completely different professional workflows, creating a common source of confusion.
Most commonly for creative users, it is a DefleMask Module file created by DefleMask, a popular cross-platform chiptune tracker. These files contain synthesized audio data (patterns, instruments, and samples) designed to emulate classic sound chips from consoles like the Sega Genesis, Game Boy, and Commodore 64. The main constraint is that .dmf files are not standard audio files; they are project files containing instructions for the synthesizer. You cannot play them in standard media players like Windows Media Player or iTunes, and you cannot upload them to streaming services like Spotify. To share your music, you must convert the .dmf project into a rendered audio format like WAV (for lossless editing) or MP3 (for web distribution).
Alternatively, in the engineering and surveying sector, a .dmf file is a Digital Map File used by Digitals, a specialized GIS software developed by Geosystem. These contain vector geodetic data, cadastral maps, and topographical layers. These files are highly proprietary and often locked to the Digitals ecosystem. Users frequently encounter friction when trying to share these maps with clients who do not have the software installed. For these use cases, the best workflow is converting the vector data to PDF for viewing/printing or DXF / SHP for interoperability with other CAD and GIS tools like AutoCAD or ArcGIS.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DMF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted 880DMF, DXF, MID, VGM, PLAN, CSV, PDF, P7S, MP3 and PNG files.
The DMF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DMF converter.
