A .dmb file can represent several entirely different data types depending on the software that created it. Most frequently, it is a Cognex DataMan Barcode Reader Configuration Backup. These files are essentially ZIP archives containing XML configuration data used by the DataMan Setup Tool. Alternatively, a .dmb file can be a compiled game world or executable created by BYOND (Build Your Own Net Dream) via its Dream Maker software. Finally, it may be a Digital Multimedia Broadcasting video file (often used by SK Telecom) structured as an MP4, or a Depth Map Binary used in the Multi-View Environment (MVE) library for 3D reconstruction.
The main disadvantage of .dmb files is their extreme ambiguity. Windows or macOS will not know which program to open them with natively. If you have a Cognex backup, you cannot easily read the settings without the specific, proprietary DataMan software installed. DMB video files often fail to play in modern web browsers or standard media players due to regional encoding or unrecognized file extensions.
