About DMA files

The .DMA file format serves several distinct, highly specialized purposes depending on the enterprise software environment. Primarily, it acts as a Database Migration Assessment project file created by the Microsoft Data Migration Assistant. This tool evaluates on-premises SQL Server databases to detect compatibility issues before migrating to Azure. Alternatively, .DMA files function as requirement management module archives utilized by IBM Rational DOORS. Less frequently, the extension is used for Daybreak Forgelight Engine game material definitions, old Amiga packed game data, or Dlubal RFEM structural analysis archives.

A major disadvantage of the .DMA format is its proprietary, closed nature. You cannot easily open or read these files without installing the exact native application. These files are totally inaccessible via web browsers or standard text editors. Furthermore, enterprise software like IBM Rational DOORS requires expensive licensing, locking your requirements data behind a paywall. This makes sharing assessment reports or module data with external stakeholders incredibly frustrating.

Users frequently need to convert .DMA files to standard, open formats to extract the underlying data. For Microsoft and IBM files, the internal structure is often based on standard compression algorithms like GZIP or ZIP. The best conversion targets are therefore standard archive extraction, allowing you to export internal data to XML, CSV, or text files for universal readability.

Because .DMA is largely an undocumented, application-specific container, standard online converters usually fail to process it. They do not understand the schema of DOORS modules or the specific metadata of SQL migration projects. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like a standard ZIP or GZIP container - extracting the contents or converting the file may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DMA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DMA32, DACPAC, XDL and EKB files.

The DMA Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DMA converter.
