The .dlx extension is most frequently associated with legacy project files created by DIALux, a widely used lighting design and calculation tool. These files contain 3D room geometries, luminaire arrangements, and calculation results stored in a Microsoft Compound binary format. While efficient for the software, this proprietary format presents significant hurdles: it is essentially a "black box" that requires the specific (and often older) DIALux 4 software to open properly, as the modern DIALux evo uses the newer EVO format. Users often struggle to access these older designs without installing discontinued software versions.
To overcome version incompatibility or to share designs with clients who lack the software, converting .dlx files is essential. For documentation and client approval, converting to PDF ensures the lighting report is viewable anywhere. For architectural integration, users typically need to convert these 3D models into DWG or DXF for use in AutoCAD or SAT for other 3D modeling tools.
