About DLIS files
A .DLIS (Digital Log Interchange Standard) file is the heavy-lifting binary format used in the oil and gas industry to store well log data, defined by API Recommended Practice 66. These files encapsulate complex borehole measurements - such as gamma ray, resistivity, and sonic logs - along with metadata about the drilling operation. While .DLIS is the standard for transferring massive datasets between service companies (like Halliburton or Schlumberger) and operators, it is a significant bottleneck for end-users.
Because it is a structured binary format, you cannot open a .DLIS file in a text editor or Excel. Accessing the data typically requires expensive, specialized petrophysical software like Emerson Geolog or Schlumberger Techlog. Furthermore, a single .DLIS physical file can contain multiple "logical files," meaning a simple extraction often misses hidden data sets. For practical analysis, users almost always need to convert these files. For geological software compatibility, the best target is LAS (Log ASCII Standard). For data analysis in spreadsheets, convert to CSV or XLSX. To simply view the log curves as a report, convert to PDF or TIFF.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DLIS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted LIS, ZIP, XMCD, PDF, EZL and LAS files.
The DLIS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DLIS converter.
