About DKB files
A .dkb file typically falls into one of three distinct categories, creating significant confusion for users.
Doctus Knowledge Base: Approximately 14% of these files are proprietary data files from the Doctus decision support system. These contain 'If-Then' logic rules and expert system knowledge. They are not standard text files and require the original legacy software to view or edit logic trees.
Renamed JPEG Image: A surprising 22% of .dkb files are actually standard JPEG images created by Drakkar Backup software or older Kodak imaging utilities. These files are functionally identical to a JPG but carry a misleading extension. Friction occurs because standard image viewers like Microsoft Photos or Mac Preview will not recognize the extension, appearing to be 'broken' files.
Ransomware Encrypted Archive: A dangerous variant (18%) is associated with the Donkey-Kong Ransomware. These are standard ZIP archives that have been encrypted and renamed. They cannot be opened without a specific decryption key or tool.
Best Conversion Targets:
For Images (Drakkar/Kodak): Rename the extension from .dkb to JPG. If valid, convert to PDF for archiving or PNG for lossless editing in Adobe Photoshop.
For Knowledge Bases (Doctus): There is no direct converter. The best approach is to open the file in a hex editor or text editor like Notepad++ to attempt textual data extraction (export to TXT or CSV).
For Ransomware: Do not attempt conversion. Identify the specific variant and look for a ZIP repair or decryption tool.
