About DFR files
A .DFR file typically serves as an Allplan Drawing Foil used in Nemetschek Allplan CAD workflows, a DataFlex Report, or a label template from Dymo Label Software. The extension is highly fragmented. Other niche applications use it for financial data exchange reports from J.P. Morgan Chase, digital fault recorder oscillograms in WinDFR, and electrochemical spectroscopy data in Gamry Instruments Framework.
Opening these files natively requires the exact software that created them. The primary disadvantage of the .DFR format is this fragmented and proprietary nature. Files generated by Dymo are useless to a CAD engineer, and an Allplan foil cannot be opened by standard text editors. These files are typically locked into vendor ecosystems, making them difficult to share with clients or colleagues who do not pay for expensive software licenses. They are not supported by standard web browsers and lack universal previewers.
Because .DFR files store specialized data, conversion targets depend entirely on the source. CAD foils are best exported to DWG or DXF to maintain vector data. Dymo labels should be converted to PDF or JPG for sharing. DataFlex reports are typically exported to CSV or PDF for standard spreadsheet and document viewing.
This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert universally because the extension is overloaded with different binary and text formats. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as an Apple Property List (plist) used in Diffraction image documents - viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DFR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The DFR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DFR converter.
