About DEP files
The .DEP file extension is highly fragmented because it is used by several completely unrelated applications. Its most common use is as a Call Log Backup file generated by Android applications like Call Log Monitor. In this specific case, the file is structurally a compressed ZIP archive containing call logs and audio recordings. Alternatively, the extension is widely used in software development for dependency files. This includes .NET assembly dependencies for the Microsoft .NET Framework, deployment configuration files in Visual Basic, and game asset dependency lists in games like Sid Meier's Civilization VI.
The main disadvantage of .DEP files is their ambiguity. Operating systems cannot reliably assign a default program to open them, leading to errors. Furthermore, the format is often proprietary or completely context-dependent. A Visual Basic dependency file requires Microsoft Visual Studio or Dependency Walker to process correctly, whereas a mobile backup can only be officially restored by the app that created it. Without the original software, the data is essentially locked and useless to the average user.
Users typically need to convert these files to access the locked data. Call log backups are best converted or extracted to XML or CSV to read the logs on a standard PC. Developer dependency files often need to be viewed as plain TXT to inspect code paths and asset links.
Because .DEP serves as a generic extension for completely different internal structures (acting as ZIP, XML, or compiled EXE formats), standard online converters almost always fail. They look at the extension and guess incorrectly. Our analyzer inspects the actual internal file signature to determine if the embedded data is a recognizable archive, text structure, or binary, allowing you a realistic workaround for extracting your files.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DEP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted DEB, BIN, DWI and PCKGDEP files.
FAQ
If you want to convert DEP file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use Microsoft Visual Studio or similar software from the "Dependency Data or Backup Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to DEP, try Microsoft Visual Studio or another comparable tool in the "Dependency Data or Backup Storage" category.
The DEP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DEP converter.
