About DEBUG files

The .debug file extension is primarily used for executable debug symbol files (in ELF or Windows formats) generated by development tools like GNU Binutils or MinGW. These files store critical memory addresses, variable mappings, and function names to help developers trace software crashes. Alternatively, many enterprise programs like SAP ERP or gaming tools like the WeiDU mod installer use .debug for plain text logs or compressed ZIP diagnostic archives.

The biggest disadvantage of a .debug file is its unpredictability. Because it has no standardized internal structure, it might be a binary ELF file that requires a command-line debugger like GDB to read, a raw text log, or a compressed bundle. Opening binary debug files in a standard text editor usually crashes the program or displays gibberish. Furthermore, they are often large and frustrating for everyday users who just want to find out why an application crashed without installing complex developer environments.

To figure out what your .debug file actually is and extract useful information, you often need to convert or unpack it. If it is a text log, converting it to TXT or CSV makes it universally readable on any device. If it is a compressed archive masquerading as a debug file, you must extract its contents. For binary symbol files, extracting the readable text strings to TXT is usually the best approach.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DEBUG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PDF, VAL, GDB and RELOC files.

The DEBUG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DEBUG converter.
