The .val file format serves multiple distinct purposes across different industries. Most commonly, it is a User Access Logging (UAL) data file generated by Microsoft Windows Server to track client requests and administrative data. Another highly popular use is as an XML sewing pattern design file created by open-source tools like Valentina and Seamly2D. Additionally, the extension is used for 3D library objects in VariCAD and VisualARQ, or as validation data for Shimadzu spectrophotometers.
The main disadvantage of the .val format is this heavy fragmentation. A Windows Server .val file is a proprietary binary database locked to the server environment. It cannot be easily read by standard text editors. Conversely, a Valentina .val file is simply plain text XML, but requires the specific pattern software to render the actual visual geometry. Users often need to convert UAL logs to CSV for auditing, or export sewing patterns to PDF or SVG for large-format printing.
Because these formats are highly specialized or proprietary, standard online converters often fail to process them. You usually need the original software to correctly parse or export the data.
