About DCE files
The .dce file extension is most frequently associated with the DriveCam Event format, a proprietary video container generated by Lytx fleet management cameras. These files are not simple video recordings; they are complex data packages triggered by specific driving events - such as hard braking, swerving, or collisions. Inside a single .dce file, you will often find dual-stream video (road-facing and driver-facing views) synchronized with telemetry data like G-force, speed, and GPS coordinates.
The primary frustration with .dce files is their inaccessibility. Because they are designed for the Lytx ecosystem, standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player typically cannot open them, or they may fail to interpret the audio and metadata correctly. To view them natively, you generally need the Lytx DriveCam Player, software often restricted to fleet managers or enterprise clients. This creates a significant bottleneck for drivers, insurance adjusters, or HR personnel who simply need to view the footage without logging into a corporate database.
To make these files usable, conversion is usually necessary. For general viewing and sharing, converting .dce to MP4 or MKV is the standard workflow. This makes the footage compatible with web browsers and mobile devices. However, users should be aware that converting to standard video formats may "flatten" the data - meaning you get the visual video feed, but the interactive sensor graphs and GPS map overlays provided by the proprietary player might be lost or burned permanently into the video image. Less commonly, a .dce file may be a raw DICOM medical imaging file; in this case, it requires specialized medical software like MicroDicom rather than a video converter.

The DCE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DCE converter.
