The .CWA file format stores raw binary accelerometer data collected by Axivity wearable sensors, such as the AX3 and AX6. Researchers and clinicians use these devices to log continuous movement, gait, and sleep data over extended periods. Specialized software like Open Movement (OMGUI) is typically required to open, process, and analyze this information.
Working with .CWA files presents major disadvantages. The format is a highly compressed, proprietary binary file. It is entirely unreadable by standard text editors or spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel. Furthermore, these files frequently exceed hundreds of megabytes in size because they store multi-day recordings at high sampling rates (often 100Hz or more). This makes sharing and quick viewing impossible without dedicated tools.
To perform standard statistical analysis, users must convert .CWA files to standard formats like CSV or TXT. However, converting a compact binary file into plain text causes a massive increase in file size. A 50MB .CWA file can easily explode into a 500MB CSV file.
