About CVG files

The .cvg extension is primarily associated with IPC-2581, an intelligent XML-based standard for exchanging printed circuit board (PCB) assembly data. Unlike traditional Gerber files that separate layers into multiple dumb images, a single .cvg file encapsulates the entire product model - including stack-up details, netlists, bill of materials (BOM), and drill specifications. This format is the default export for industry-heavyweights like Cadence Allegro and is widely supported by Altium Designer. While highly efficient for manufacturing (DPMX), the format acts as a black box for users without expensive EDA software (costing thousands annually), making it difficult to simply 'view' the board or share it with non-technical stakeholders. A secondary, legacy use case is the Calamus Vector Graphic format from the Atari ST era, used by Calamus SL desktop publishing software. These files are virtually impossible to open on modern systems without emulation or specialized conversion tools. For PCB workflows, the best conversion targets are Gerber RS-274X (for broad manufacturing compatibility), ODB++ (for intelligent transfer), or PDF (for documentation and archiving). For Calamus files, converting to SVG or PDF preserves vector scalability.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CVG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SVG, CSV, PNG, JPEG, PDF, SCN, JPG and GIF files.

The CVG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CVG converter.
