About CMM files

The .CMM extension is a 'collision' format used by three completely different industries, creating significant confusion. Most commonly, it is a TRACE32 PRACTICE Script used by developers working with Lauterbach embedded debuggers. These are plain text files containing automation commands (using the PRACTICE language) to flash hardware or run tests. While they are readable in a text editor, they are often proprietary to the TRACE32 environment and need conversion to PDF or HTML for documentation purposes.

In the scientific community, a .CMM file is a Chimera Marker Model created by UCSF Chimera. These are XML-based files that define positions, colors, and notes for markers in 3D molecular structures. Users often need to convert these to standard PDB or CIF formats to share data with other molecular visualization tools.

Finally, in global logistics, .CMM stands for Container Movement Message. These are EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) files used by carriers like MSC to track shipping containers. These files are dense, unformatted text strings that are illegible to humans. Converting them to CSV or Excel allows logistics managers to actually read the status codes and timestamps without specialized EDI software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CMM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted 835, WFO, VTK, CFM, LPS, CCM and CMS files.

The CMM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CMM converter.
