About CLX files
The .CLX extension acts as a container for several distinct, proprietary data types, primarily serving as a Compiled Spell Checker Lexicon. Most commonly associated with Spellex medical and legal spelling software or Adobe products, these files store dictionary data in a binary, compiled format optimized for fast lookup speeds rather than human readability. This compilation process renders the file unreadable in standard text editors like Microsoft Word or Notepad, a frequent frustration for users attempting to manually edit or audit their custom word lists.
Beyond dictionaries, a significant portion of .CLX files are Electrophoresis Raw Data files generated by Caliper Life Sciences (now part of PerkinElmer) LabChip instruments. These contain complex biological analysis data that requires specialized interpretation. Other variations include Motorsport Calibration files for Magneti Marelli ECUs and clipboard history files for the ClipX manager.
Because these formats are highly specific and often proprietary, direct conversion requires identifying the source software. For Spellex or dictionary files, users typically need to use the original application to export the word list to TXT or DIC for editing. For LabChip data, the goal is usually analysis; converting these files to CSV or XLSX (Excel) is best done through the original instrument software's export function to preserve data integrity. For archiving unreadable binary blobs, wrapping them in a standard ZIP is often the only viable option.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CLX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CLX file to BASE64, HEX, BIN, ENC, CRYPT, AES, DES, RSA, PGP, GPG, ASC or KEY, you can use Spellex or similar software from the "Compiled Dictionary or Data File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert CER, BIN, PEM, DER, KEY, P7S, PFX, ENC, P12, BASE64, P7B or HEX files to CLX, try Spellex or another comparable tool in the "Compiled Dictionary or Data File" category.
The CLX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CLX converter.
