About CFI files

A .CFI file is primarily a CAD Drawing Cache file generated by engineering software like Nemetschek Allplan or AutoCAD. These files are not standalone documents; they are temporary 'helper' files created by the software to speed up the rendering of complex 2D/3D geometry or to manage DDS (DirectDraw Surface) caching.

The Problem: Users often discover .CFI files in their project folders and mistake them for the actual drawing data (like DWG or DXF). Because .CFI files are proprietary binary caches containing only partial rendering data, they cannot be opened directly by double-clicking, nor can they be converted to JPG or PDF using standard image converters. They lack the complete vector definitions required to reconstruct the drawing.

The Solution: To convert the content associated with a .CFI file, you must open the original project file (e.g., NDW for Allplan) in the parent software. From there, you can use the 'Export' function to save the drawing as a portable PDF for archiving, a DWG for editing, or a SVG for web use. If you only possess the .CFI file without the main project database, the data is likely unrecoverable.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CFI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PDF, DWG, BAK and CGM files.

The CFI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CFI converter.
