Most commonly, a .cb file is a proprietary database created by Cashbook Complete (often developed by Acclaim Software). These files store an entire financial year's worth of data, including ledgers, invoices, and bank reconciliations. While powerful within the application, this format is often frustrating for users trying to migrate to modern cloud accounting platforms like Xero or QuickBooks. The file is often based on the legacy JetDB engine (similar to older Microsoft Access MDB files), meaning users cannot simply double-click to view their financial history in Microsoft Excel without first exporting or converting the data.
Alternatively, in the engineering world, a .cb file is a CAD/CAM project created by CamBam. Unlike the binary accounting files, these are structured XML files that contain geometry, machining operations, and toolpaths. Users often need to convert these into machine-readable G-Code (NC or TAP) for CNC routers or standard vector formats like DXF to share with other CAD software like AutoCAD. Opening an XML-based .cb file in a text editor will reveal readable code, but it requires the original software to visualize the actual part geometry.
