A .CAPX file is primarily a Construct Compressed Project file created by Scirra for the Construct 2 game engine. It serves as a portable, single-file container for an entire game development project, bundling the source code (XML layouts, event sheets) and multimedia assets (sprites, audio, fonts) into a standard ZIP archive. Users typically encounter these files when trying to open legacy game source code or tutorials from forums.
The main challenge with .CAPX files is that Construct 2 has been retired in favor of Construct 3, making it difficult to open or compile these projects without an old license or specific software version. Furthermore, the file is not a playable game itself; it is the raw "blueprint" that must be compiled.
For most users, the goal is either to play the game or extract the assets. To play, you must import the file into Construct 3 (which runs in web browsers) and export it as HTML5, Android .APK, or Windows EXE. If you only need the images or music, you can simply rename the file extension from .CAPX to ZIP and extract the contents to access PNG sprites and WAV audio files directly.
Note: In rare cases (approx. 1%), a .CAPX file may be a CapXML Score created by Capella Software. These are musical notation files that can be converted to MusicXML or PDF using the Capella software.
